Since 1995, professionals across New York state have been meeting monthly to discuss the trends, systemic changes, and needs of older adults with IDD. Though our members have changed, our passion and dedication have continued to push us to seek ways to improve services and supports for older adults with IDD.
The “Third Age” is a positive aging theory proposed by British historian Peter Laslett (1915-2001) in the 1980s. Laslett described life as being composed of four ages, with the culmination being the Third Age. Laslett mentioned that the Third Age was generally a time frame after retirement with health, vigor and positive attitude, except for particular cases. The Third Age was noted to emerge only in developed counties with healthy aging and economic conditions.
